Why a hobo slouches — and when it shouldn't
The hobo shape comes from an unstructured body with no internal stiffener, so the bag folds into a crescent when it hangs empty and fills out when loaded. That is the point of it. What you do not want is a hobo that collapses completely and creases permanently across the middle — that is a thin hide rather than a soft one. Suppleness comes from the tannage and finish; a hide can be soft and still have body. If a bag weighs almost nothing empty, that is thinness, not quality. A medium leather hobo typically weighs 400–700g empty.
The open-top question
Many hobos close with a magnet, a single snap, or nothing at all. That is fine at a desk and less fine on a crowded bus. If a hobo is going to be your city bag, look for a zip top, or at minimum an internal zipped pocket for a phone and cards.
