What "soft" actually means in a shoulder bag

Softness is three separate things, and they can be bought separately. The hide — lambskin and calfskin are naturally softer than cowhide, and washed or pebbled finishes soften a hide after tanning. The thickness — a thin hide drapes beautifully and also dents, stretches at the hardware and wears at the corners sooner. And whether the bag is structured — much of what reads as soft is simply the absence of an internal stiffener.

A soft bag that feels almost weightless is usually thin, not high-grade. An empty medium leather shoulder bag typically weighs 350–700g.

Strap drop decides the fit, not strap length

Drop is the vertical distance from your shoulder to the top of the bag — roughly half the total strap length. Around 55–60cm sits at the hip, 45–50cm at the waist, and over 65cm the bag swings when you walk. Total strap length on its own tells you almost nothing, which is why we publish the drop.

Made in Florence, not just Italian leather
