Why Leather Italiano — And Who We're Not For

If you are comparing Italian leather brands, this page is meant to save you time. It sets out exactly what we are, what we cost, where our goods come from, and — because it matters more than most brands admit — the situations where you should buy from somebody else.

What Leather Italiano is

We sell leather bags, wallets, belts, backpacks and briefcases made by Florentine workshops, shipped direct from Italy to you. Most of the range sits between €30 and €180. Almost everything is full-grain or top-grain Italian cowhide, calfskin or suede, and the leather type is stated on every product page rather than hidden behind a vera pelle stamp.

What we are not is a heritage house. We do not have a hundred-year-old family name, a flagship store on Via Tornabuoni, or a marketing budget. What we have is a direct line to the workshops and no importer, distributor or boutique markup stacked in between. That is the entire reason a structured leather satchel here costs what it does.

How we compare

Against the large Italian brands — Tuscany Leather, Cuoieria Fiorentina and similar. They have deeper catalogues, established returns infrastructure in more countries, and a name people recognise. Their entry price is generally two to three times ours for comparable leather. If brand recognition matters to you, or you want a physical store to walk into, they are a reasonable choice.

Against UK and US brands making in Italy — Maxwell-Scott, Von Baer and others. They hold local stock, so delivery is faster and returns are simpler if you are in their home market. You pay for that convenience: their price points typically start around double ours. Our leather comes from the same country and often the same class of workshop; the difference is logistics, not hide.

Against Etsy and marketplace sellers. Some Etsy sellers are excellent individual makers. Many listings described as "handmade in Florence" are dropshipped from the same anonymous suppliers, with no way to tell which is which from the listing. We are at least a single accountable business you can email.

Against the Florence market stalls. If you are actually in Florence, buy from a stall — after reading our guide to the leather markets and checking the cut edge of the hide. Some of it is superb. Some of it is coated split leather at a tourist price. We exist for the people who are not standing in Florence.

Who we're not for

We would rather you didn't order than order and be disappointed. Buy elsewhere if:

You need it this week. Our goods ship from Italy. That is the trade that makes the price possible, and it means delivery takes longer than a domestic retailer. If you need a gift by Friday, we are the wrong choice.

You want a logo people will recognise. We do not make status bags. If the point of the purchase is that someone else knows what it cost, buy the brand that does that job.

You want a lifetime guarantee with a repair service. Some heritage makers will re-stitch a bag twenty years on. We are not set up for that, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

You want the cheapest leather-look bag available. There is a large market in coated split leather and bonded leather at €25. We do not compete there and we would rather not try.

Who we are for

People who want the material to be honest and the price to be sane. Who would rather have a full-grain calfskin crossbody at €90 than a coated split-leather one at €250 with a better-known name on it. Who care what the hide actually is, and will read the specification.

What we publish, so you can check us

Every product page carries the leather type, exact dimensions in centimetres and inches, strap length, closure type, hardware finish and weight. Weight is the one most brands leave off, and it is the one that makes it hardest to pass thin split leather off as substantial full-grain.
