How to Measure Your Belt Size
There are three reliable ways to find your size. The first is the most accurate.
1. Measure an existing belt you already wear
Lay the belt flat. Measure from the post inside the buckle (where the leather folds around the buckle bar), not from the buckle tip, all the way to the hole you currently use. That measurement, in centimetres, is your belt size. So if your favourite belt measures 95cm to the hole you wear, you are a size 95.
2. Measure your natural waist
Wrap a tape measure around your waist where the belt will sit, over your trousers, not bare skin. Keep it snug but not tight. Add 5cm (or 2 inches) to that measurement to find your belt size. So a 90cm waist needs a size 95 belt.
3. Use your trouser waist size
Take your trouser waist size in inches and add 2. A 32 inch waist takes a size 34 belt, which is roughly 85cm in Italian and European sizing. This is the quickest method when you do not have a tape measure handy.

What Does Italian Belt Size Mean?
Italian and European belt sizes are measured in centimetres from the buckle to the centre hole, not the waist. The number stamped on the belt is the belt length, not the waist size. A size 100 Italian belt fits a 95cm or 37 inch waist comfortably, because there are extra holes either side of the centre for adjustment.

Western Belt Sizes
Western belts use a different system. They are measured from the tip of the buckle to the centre hole, not from the buckle post like dress belts. As a result western belts run roughly 2 inches smaller than the number stamped on them. A size 36 western belt fits a 34 inch waist. A size 40 western belt fits a 38 inch waist. If you usually wear a size 100 European belt, look for a size 38 or 40 western belt.
Snug or Loose? How to Get the Perfect Fit
If you prefer a snug fit, subtract 1 to 2 inches from your waist size. If you prefer a looser, more relaxed fit, add 1 to 2 inches. If you are between sizes, always size up rather than down. You can punch a new hole closer to the buckle for a tighter fit, but you cannot make a too-small belt longer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are men's belts measured?
From the post inside the buckle (where the leather folds) to the centre hole. The result, in centimetres, is the belt size.
How do I choose the right size belt?
Add 2 inches (or 5cm) to your trouser waist size. So a 34 inch waist takes a size 36 belt, or roughly 90cm in Italian sizing.
Should I size up or down?
Always size up. You can add holes for a tighter fit, but you cannot extend a belt that is too short.
What size is a medium belt for men?
A medium men's belt is typically size 90 to 95cm in Italian / European sizing, fitting a 34 to 36 inch waist.
What size belt is Large (L)?
A large men's belt is typically size 100 to 105cm in Italian / European sizing, fitting a 38 to 40 inch waist.
How long is a size 100 belt?
A size 100 belt is 100cm or about 39.4 inches long, measured from the buckle post to the centre hole.
Does belt size mean waist size?
No. The belt size is the belt length, not the waist size. The waist it fits is usually 5cm (2 inches) smaller than the belt size number.
What size belt do I need for a 34 inch waist?
A size 36 belt in inches, or a size 90 to 95 in Italian / European sizing, or a size Medium.
What size belt do I need for a 36 inch waist?
A size 38 belt in inches, or a size 95 to 100 in Italian / European sizing, between Medium and Large.
